50 Years of Art Basel – the 1980s
In a sense, today's artworld has its roots in the 1980s. As Art Basel entered its second decade, galleries proliferated from New York to Cologne, new movements arose, and new markets opened up. Yet the art community also faced deep trauma, most notably with the AIDS crisis, which claimed the lives of many artists and prompted new forms of activism.

The second talk in our mini-series dedicated to the 50 years of Art Basel revisits this key period. How did the art world evolve in this decade? Which new movements developed? What were the landmark artworld events that shaped the era?
